The Chapter Archive

The mission of the Chapter Archive of Majorca (CAM) is to collect, preserve and disseminate Majorca Cathedral’s documentary heritage, comprising all of the contemporary and historical documents, on whatever medium, that the Chapter has produced or received while carrying out its duties.

The CAM has a long and active history of collecting and preserving documents. The documentation it preserves refers above all to the Cathedral’s administration and governance and to the liturgy celebrated at the Cathedral, but it is worth noting that it also holds documents relating to Majorca’s civil life: books of notaries’ records from the 14th to the 18th centuries, information on the inheritances of noble families and a range of documentation regarding estates, farms and other places in Majorca after the Conquest. The documents held in the Chapter Archive are a record of a large part of Majorca’s history and culture.

The Archive’s history begins with the construction of the Cathedral and the establishment of the Chapter of canons. Although the Archive came into being at the moment that the Diocese created its first document, the documents were not all grouped together in a single physical space until 1526. Initially it was located in the main sacristy, until 1530 when Bishop Rodrigo Sánchez del Mercado ordered the construction of rooms specifically for the archive. Canon Jeroni Milia was chosen to be the first canon archivist and since then, and almost without interruption, a member of the Chapter has held the post of canon archivist. This post is currently held by Canon Bartomeu Moll.
