Yesterday, June 21, on the occasion of the summer solstice, the Balearic Society of Mathematics, together with the Cabildo Catedral, presented and explained the light phenomenon that occurs in the Cathedral of Mallorca on this date.
First, Mn. Teodor Suau, dean-president of the Cabildo Catedral de Mallorca, welcomed more than 2,000 attendees. Next, Pep Lluís Pol and Daniel Ruiz, members of the Balearic Mathematics Society, explained the summer solstice luminous phenomenon in which the rosette of the main façade is aligned on the largest rosette. The explanation was completed with a model of the Cathedral and the solar movement, gift of the Museum of Mathematics of Catalonia. At the indicated time, the attendees were invited to contemplate the light phenomenon.
In second place, the Balearic Mathematical Society presented a composition of 49 photographs taken during a whole year of the sun in the Cathedral. Each week they have made the same photograph at the same time to observe the apparent movement of the sun. This composition shows, therefore, the path of the sun at any given time throughout the year, surprising for its beauty. At the exit, the assistants could take a postcard of this image.
