Joan Parets, priest and musical documentarian, died yesterday aged 80. This renowned musicologist, who was born in Santa Maria, dedicated part of his life to study of musicology, particularly relating to the Balearics, and he leaves a documentary legacy of great value that future generations will be able to build on to examine the musical memory of the Islands in greater depth.
Over many years, Mgr Parets created an important archive that is divided between the Fundació ACA (Acoustic Creation Area Foundation) and the Cathedral. The Chapter Archive of Mallorca holds the personal collection of Joan Parets Serra, who kindly donated his legacy to the Cathedral in December 2016. This collection mainly comprises books and documents from periodicals, as well as some original writings by Mgr Parets. The principal subject matter of his legacy is the Song of the Sibyl, but it also includes documents relating to Mallorcan saints and blesseds (Ramon Llull, Junípero Serra, Alphonsus Rodriguez, Catherine of Palma and Francinaina Cirer), carols and traditional celebrations.
